Family Photo Friday

 

These are the Boyer siblings:

 Philip, Charlie, Harriet, & Mamie.

(from left to right & back to front)

 

Harriet was my grandpa Robert Fifer's mother.

She lived from approx 1889-1967.

(At this time, I don't have the "proof" [birth/death records] to say definately.)

Family Photo Friday

I have shared family photos in several past posts (introduction, Family Old Photos, "Inchelium Couple Adopt Girl"). Lately I have had the wonderful opportunity to go through the photo collection of my Grandma Virginia (my dad's mom). Since I am amassing quite a collection (& hope to come by many more), I have decided that it would be fun to christen Friday as “Family Photo Friday.”

These photos have both been added to Family Old Photos

& the first has been added to Dead Fred (where all individuals must be deceased).

Genealogy? It's a lot of work!

I have recently begun following Ancestry's blog (at http://blogs.ancestry.com). They have a recent post - Family History All Done? What’s Your Number? (posted August 16, 2012 by Crista Cowan) - that I think is worth sharing.

 

Sometimes people don't appreciate just how much work goes into genealogy. It's sooo much more than just slapping names onto a tree & saying "done," though that in and of itself could be a bit of work. (Please refer to the photo I have included from the aforementioned Ancestry blog post.) At the very basic level, there are dates & places of births, baptisms (if applicable), marriages, deaths, & burials. All of these things need to be corroborated by proof, which in turn needs to be properly cited.

Dead Fred

In my August 22 post, Family Old Photos, I shared about my account & photo sharing with (of course) Family Old Photos. I shared the three photos that I had uploaded to that point.
 

Well, I have just submitted a photo (the one of my paternal grandfather, Robert Vernon Fifer) to Dead Fred. Because the site requires that all persons in the photographs be deceased, I cannot upload the same photos, as my paternal grandmother & both paternal grandparents are still alive. (You can view a version of his obituary from www.memorialsolutions.com, as his obituary from Colville's Statesman-Examiner is no longer online.)

 

I'm beginning to collect quite a few photos of my ancestors. I will be uploading them as time allows.

One day, while searching YouTube for genealogy information, I came across The Google Genealogist. While I haven't finished watching all five of the videos below, they seemed (at least at first glance) worth sharing.

In my last post (Family Old Photos, published August 22, 2012),  I talked about family resemblences. Well, in my family, that's not always the case. The photo of my sister & I (right), was taken in 1983 or 1984 & published in a local newspaper. (The photo was taken at the same time as the photo below.)

The story that went along with the photo - “Inchelium Couple Adopt Girl” - was her welcome-to-the-family (vs. birth) announcement.

 Growing up, I heard that I looked like my parents.
If I was with my mom, I was told "you look like your mother".
If I was with my dad, I was told "you look like your father".

I think that I have my mom's general look, but my dad's eyes & nose.

In looking at these photos, I could take the above statement a step further.
I have my maternal grandmother's general look
(who got her look from her dad).
I have my paternal grandfather's eyes & nose.
(My mom, however, always said that my dad looked like his mom. IDK!)

I will definately have more photos
along with what I think are resemblances.

As an aspiring Genealogist / Family Historian, it seems only fitting that my first post (aside from my intro) should be on Professional Genealogy: A Manual for Researchers, Writers, Editors, Lecturers, and Librarians. I ordered this book off of Amazon, and it appears to be an absolute necessary resource!

I have always loved stories (including family stories) since childhood.

What I didn’t love was my mother teaching me research skills in the library.

(But am I ever thankful!)

For some time I’ve considered Genealogy / Family History.

So this blog will chart my road from hobbiest through certification & beyond.
